A Brief History
Since its beginning, Sausalito has
been many things to many people. For
more than a century, fully rigged
sailing ships have taken shelter along
the waterfront. Visitors today have a
unique opportunity to view some of the
historic boats, classic yachts and
sailing vessels in Sausalito’s scenic
harbors and marinas.
The
northern region of Sausalito was once a
major ship building site during World
War II Liberty ships, tankers, and
landing craft were manufactured in
Sausalito. This area, known as the
Marinship, later became a haven for
artists, writers and crafts people who
remain today. Their unique and bohemian
lifestyle thrives in this area still, as
well as Sausalito’s colony of floating
homes.
The major event of the year is the very popular Sausalito
Art Festival, every Labor Day weekend, stars of the contemporary Art scene
are showcased on the sparkling bay shores of Sausalito,
California's Mediterranean-like seaside village. Over
one-million visitors from throughout the world have
experienced Festival since its inaugural
event in 1952. Sausalito hosts the West Coast's ultimate Art
